Would you like to know the difference between "yum update" and "yum upgrade".

Here is the difference of "yum update" and "yum upgrade", which are quite simple.

yum update - If you run the command without any packages, update will update every currently installed package. If one or more packages or package globs are specified, Yum will only update the listed packages. While updating packages, yum will ensure that all dependencies are satisfied.

If the –obsoletes flag is present yum will include package obsoletes in its calculations, this makes it better for distro-version changes.

yum upgrade - This is exactly the same as the update command with the –obsoletes flag set.

Remarks:
The above behaviour only applies when the obsolutes=0 is set in the yum.conf.

1 is the default and they are the same and both do obsoletes.
0 means that upgrade does handle obsoletes, and update does not.
